Public Consultation (2020)

  • Civic Action for Free and Fair Election Project (CAFFE Project) was conducted by Mon State-based civil society organizations (CSOs) including JCSDO, MYPO, HURFOM, Konhongsar, and RICE.
  • The CAFFE project group was divided into five public consultation teams: the RICE Consultation Team, JCSDO Consultation Team, MYPO Consultation Team, Kon Hongsar Consultation Team, and HURFOM Consultation Team. Each individual team held public consultations and collected data from focus group discussions (FGDs) and key informants’ interviews (KIIs) in fourteen townships between February and March 2020. The Public consultations were stopped for almost two months as the first wave of the COVID-19 began in Myanmar in April, and the teams conducted interviews with key persons instead. The five teams consulted and collected data from 499 people in total, which included 80 people from political parties, 146 people from CSOs, CBOs, literature and cultural groups, 24 village administrators, 50 farmers, 148 women and youth, 32 students, and one journalist.
  • After gathering data from two types of focus groups in 14 townships, the teams analysed the data and wrote the report. While analyzing the data, the teams also conducted research in order to compare information collected from the public and events, which happened after data collection, leading up to September. While writing the draft, the teams prepared to include a session on ‘COVID-19 and the 2020 elections’ and continued gathering data on this issue.
